Mestiza consciousness is a confluence of identity that affirms the hybridity of identity and that it can sometimes be contradictory. It is a form of challenging traditional forms of coalition-based or politics that seek to enforce rigid categories that determine the basis of exclusion and inclusion. Anzaldúa argues that these categories are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things because certain bodies will simultaneously be always already both included and excluded in different ways. They argue we need to disrupt this narrative of either/or in favor of affirming the contradictory nature of identity (Anzaldúa).
