Intersectionality refers to the different categories or axis of oppression in which identity may fall under. An intersectional approach recognizes that we all have different experiences depending upon our relationships to certain power structures, but it also recognizes the need for politics and activism that recognizes the interlocking nature of these power structures. For example, for a black woman, her sexuality will always be racialized and her race will always be sexualized because of the way the black woman’s body has been coded historically (Combahee River Collective).
