A holistic approach, according to Serano, recognizes that human behavior associated with sex, gender, and sexuality are complex and are affected by different factors given different contexts (Serano, 152). This form of thinking avoids binaristic assumptions and making totalizing truth claims and rejects both gender essentialism and gender artifactualism. Each area of analysis is important depending upon context, and each factor is acting at the same time and in multiple different ways. No one factor or theory is completely deterministic. Instead, complexity in analysis is encouraged.
